East-Jerusalemite Palestinian Students at the Hebrew University

In recent years, the phenomenon of East Jerusalem Palestinians studying at the Hebrew University has greatly expanded. Until recently, the majority of the Palestinian population would have treated them as crossing the lines and cooperating with the occupation, but the expansion of this trend to hundreds of students a year reflects a change in Palestinian public opinion and also in the action of the Israeli authorities. In this presentation, Dr. Cohen will talk about a unique program opened at the University for the Training of Palestinian Hebrew Teachers. This unique case reflects the complexity of the situation in Jerusalem, along with dramatic changes occurring in recent years.

Adar Cohen is Academic Director, Department of Teacher Education, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (since 2017). Former National Civic Education Supervisor, The Israeli Ministry of Education (2008-2012). Cohen is currently visiting scholar at UC Davis and Senior Israel Educational Consultant for ARZA Team, Union for Reform Judaism.

Dr. Cohen and his wife, Rabbi Galit Cohen-Kedem, are visiting for the year as emissaries of Kehilat Kodesh v’Chol, a Progressive Congregation in Holon, Israel, and sister congregation to B’nai Israel in Sacramento.   If you choose, you may make a donation to Kodesh v’Chol in any amount at this link, and please make a note that it is in honor of the Adar Cohen program at Bet Haverim.

This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.
