Executive Director

Serves as the chief executive officer of the synagogue’s administration and operations. This is a full-time position, to begin January 2018.

About the Congregation Bet Haverim community:

Congregation Bet Haverim (CBH) is located in Davis, CA, home of University of California, Davis.  It is a dynamic university city, located midway between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, and 20 minutes from Sacramento.  CBH is a vibrant Reform Jewish congregation of 270 families with an active youth program and a thriving Jewish preschool, with an enrollment capacity of 52 students, ages 2-5 years.

We are a welcoming community, open to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.  CBH promotes positive Jewish experiences in an inclusive environment. Through education, worship and community, we create opportunities for partners to engage, experience and explore their personal Jewish identity.

With a long-term Senior Rabbi and an energetic new Director of Education, Congregation Bet Haverim is poised for growth in membership and engagement, and resulting administrative and fiscal expansion. We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented, entrepreneurial leader who can take initiative and help us realize that vision.

Executive Director responsibilities:

  • Staff/Volunteer Management: Oversee activities of four+ paid staff — including Preschool Director, Communications Coordinator, Office Manager and Bookkeeper — and address all related human resources issues.  Regularly re-evaluate staffing needs and roles to ensure that we are properly utilizing our staff and their talents.  Work with the Board of Directors on long-term staffing plans.
  • Facilities Management: Oversee the master calendar and operations of our campus, including coordinating space rental, ensuring events are properly set up and staffed, managing third-party maintenance and security staff, while developing and implementing a campus vision that reflects our evolving priorities.
  • Financial Management: Work closely with Treasurer and Finance Committee to manage cash, AR, AP and payroll.  Oversee development of annual budget and prepare budget documents.  Execute the financial policies and decisions of the Board of Directors.
  • Membership: Provide the key point of contact for prospective members, with responsibility for welcoming and guiding those interested in joining our community.  Work with lay leadership to develop and update intake materials, dues processes and welcoming events, as well as ongoing member engagement.
  • Development: Oversee staff and volunteers regarding all aspects of fundraising programs, including annual operational funding, capital campaign, special events, endowment funds, ongoing gift programs and grants.  Manage and update membership data tracking.
  • Communications: Work with the Communications Coordinator to ensure that regular and special communications are timely and accurate.  Address inquiries from members and prospective members.
  • Event Management: Work with clergy, musicians, lay leaders and staff to execute events, including B’nai Mitzvah logistics and coordination of needs for High Holy Days activities, such as facility use, parking and security arrangements.  Oversee the development and distribution of High Holy Days packets, tickets and publicity.  Field and respond to inquiries from members and non-members concerning High Holy Days activities.
  • Technology: Manage and work with existing and new technology systems and Web-based communication platforms.  Experience with CRM and financial software required.

 

The Executive Director will be expected to address other issues, as needed, at the direction of the Board, and in coordination with the Senior Rabbi and other clergy.  To view a more comprehensive description of the position, please click here.

 

Executive Director desired qualities:

Applicants should be creative, forward-thinking leaders with a solid foundation in financial planning, budgeting and reporting; and broad-based managerial experience.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills a must.  Prior Jewish professional or synagogue experience a plus.

Compensation:
